My Journey to Traveling Nature

I grew up in inner-city Chicago, and my family didn’t even have a car until I was in high school. Our outings entailed riding the bus and/or subway to local attractions. Fortunately, Chicago offers plenty of those.

The Lincoln Park Zoo and the Museum of Science of Industry were favorites. Once each summer, we boarded an Amtrak train to Detroit to visit my cousins. One benefit of this upbringing is my familiarity and comfort with public transportation. Now, I only rent a car when it is absolutely necessary, which makes traveling much easier.

I started traveling much more during my years working as a veterinarian. Conferences and meetings brought me to many cities within the United States two to three times each year. I always tried to add a couple of days to the trip to see the sights. So far, I have visited 44 of the 50 states.

I first left the country to see Niagara Falls in high school. My next overseas trip was many years later, but I have visited 12 countries and hope to keep adding to that list.

A few years ago, I began writing about my experiences and have been published on several online travel websites. I started Traveling Nature to have a place to share even more of the places and cultures that I have been lucky to enjoy.

Nature Journey

Nature has always held a special place in my heart, and I feel a strong connection to the natural world. I currently live in Scottsdale, in the Sonoran Desert. I moved here mainly for the weather, but I have come to love the complexity and beauty of the desert landscape.

To help share this connection to nature, I became certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy as a forest bathing guide. I now lead desert bathing sessions in the Phoenix Valley. I bring this perspective to my writing about natural settings. I seek out gardens, parks, and places to hike whenever I travel.

Why I Blog

Traveling Nature helps those who travel to explore the art, culture, history, and natural areas of new places worldwide. I will share my experiences traveling alone, with my daughter, and with friends.

I live in Arizona, so I will show you how to visit the Scottsdale and Phoenix area and other areas in this great state, such as Sedona and wine country. I will also describe where to stay and what to do in different parts of the United States, especially California and the Northeast.

During many trips to Europe, I have explored eight countries and hope to visit more in the coming years. I have spent extensive time in Portugal and can’t wait to share my adventures there. I have also visited Japan, Canada, and Costa Rica, with many other countries on my bucket list.

Traveling Nature will also provide resources, such as tips on solo travel, traveling for weeks at a time with just a carry-on bag, the benefits of spending at least several days in one site, and how to get around without renting a car.
